Description
Customized and Updated 1958 Chevrolet 3100 Stepside with V-8 PowerThere’s a pretty solid reason why Chevy Apache pickups from the late Fifties are such a draw for collectors—they’re undeniably handsome trucks. Take this 1958 Chevrolet 3100 Apache half-ton, big-window, stepside pickup, finished in Jade Mist Metallic with a few touches in Antique White. Freshly restored in 2018 and fitted with a later V-8 engine and three-speed automatic transmission, it also has a custom interior and loads of other personalized touches. Yet it never loses that distinct identity of a 1950s-era pickup.
POWERTRAIN
Under the hood of this Apache is a 307-cu.in. V-8 from a 1971 Chevrolet pickup. The engine features a rebuilt Rochester Quadrajet four-barrel carburetor with a divorced choke, an ethanol-resistant accelerator pump, a new Edelbrock Performer RPM Intake Manifold, new timing chain and gears, crankshaft gasket and seal, new oil pan gasket, new Summit racing billet aluminum distributor and ignition coil, new water pump, polished Hilborn-style finned aluminum breather scoop with a filter, new Lokar throttle and transmission kickdown cables and brackets, new Lokar throttle pedal, new water pump, radiator, new hoses, new battery and cables. The engine is secured with side and front motor mounts, and a new rear, frame-mounted 16-gallon fuel tank that was installed with a new fuel pump and sender. The engine delivers good oil pressure with a reliable range of 30 to 40 psi. Like the rest of the truck, the engine bay is beautifully detailed and polished.
The same 1971 Chevrolet pickup donated the Turbo-Hydramatic 350 three-speed automatic transmission that now directs power to the rear axle. The transmission includes a new chrome steel finned oil pan, new speedometer drive gear and gasket, and locking dip stick. New transmission cooling lines are plumbed directly to the new radiator. The truck has received new U-joints and a driveshaft yoke. The rear is a 10-bolt differential, which has been recently serviced with a new rear pinion seal.
CHASSIS
Spend some time going through the supplied photographs of the frame, underbody and suspension. The truck is free of rust or any corrosion. New power-steering gear box with power-steering pump, pulley, brackets, and belt. Suspension work includes front dual-flex springs, lowering the front end by three inches. New Western Classics provided the shock absorbers. The front frame horns were repaired, including sectioning in the left frame horn, and straightening the right side. The brakes are power assisted, and upgraded with discs up front and drums in the rear, with all new brake lines. The wheels are Wheel Vintiques 12-Series Smoothie powder coated red. The front wheels are 15x6, and the rears are 15x8, fitted with trim rings and center caps. The Coker American Classic Radial wide whitewalls, are staggered, with 205/75R15s up front and 235/75R15s in the rear.
EXTERIOR
The cab and front clip are all original steel, with the exception of a few small patch panels in the lower cab corners, the lower rear right fender, and the bottoms of both doors. The cab stayed on the truck during the restoration, but the rest of the sheet metal came off. The body was stripped to bare metal and repaired. The cargo box sheet metal is all new.
The factory color was Tartan Turquoise (Code 710A), so I decided to stay in the spirit of a green and
finished it in Jade Mist metallic, with Antique White behind the grille and around the windows. The wood in the bed is refinished oak, with new stainless-steel slats and attaching hardware. The fuel filler on the cab was welded shut and the fuel tank was relocated under the bed, with the filler behind the license plate. The bed features a Gaylord's fiberglass tonneau cover painted to match the exterior (Truck is featured on Gaylord's Lids website-check it out). The chrome bumpers, grille, emblems, and stainless-steel are in excellent condition. The wiper system was rebuilt.
INTERIOR
The interior received a number of custom updates, including a 40/20/40 split-bench seat from a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado. New c
hrome tilt steering column with column shift, Auto Meter gauge package under dash, and a new Banjo style full wrap leather steering wheel.
The upholstery is in excellent condition with no tears, stains or obvious damage. The drivers seat is adjusted electrically and includes electric lumbar support. The dash is in excellent condition with chrome vent grilles with their original finish, AutoMeter gauges, and an AM/FM stereo with Bluetooth functionality. The head unit is from Antique Automobile Radio which is a reproduction of a 1967 Pontiac GTO radio in chrome and plays through four speakers,
Pioneers in kick panel and Pioneer 6X9’s in rear cab corners
and a JL Audio powered subwoofer behind the seats. The vent windows, door felts, and seals were all replaced during the restoration. The door panels and arm rests are in excellent condition with no visible damage.
ELECTRICAL
The truck is equipped with new retro blue dot halogen headlights with a diamond cut feature.
The truck was fitted with a new heavy-duty headlight harness to support four halogen headlights.

New Ram Horn exhaust manifold center dump, 2.5 pipes and Flow Master mufflers.
DOCUMENTATION
This vehicle will be sold on a clean California title in the seller’s name. A copy of the previous owner’s title showing his 1973 purchase and receipts for parts and work done the last four years will also be included. Also included is the truck cover as shown, green and white touch-up paint, and operating instructions for AM/FM radio.
This 1958 Chevrolet 3100 Apache has been seriously customized, but it never strays far from its roots as a 1950s pickup. The color scheme is spot on and the modern updates are sure to be appreciated.
