Description
Offered for your consideration is a pair of vintageHeppner
4½ inch mid-tweeters
removed from my
Sherwood Evolution Six
speakers made in 1975. The Evolution Six are three-way speakers and these capable drivers covered the upper midrange to lower treble frequencies.
As you probably know, suburban Chicago-based Heppner was a notable supplier to the domestic speaker industry from the 1950’s-70’s.
Per the EIA source/date codes on the magnet covers, “575504” and “575508", these tweeters were manufactured by Heppner (575) in the 4th and 8th weeks, respectively, of 1975.
So, please take a look at my large photos and read the remaining description to decide if these uncommon drivers are correct for your needs.
These tweeters are in clean, near excellent condition. The ribbed paper cones, with felt baffles factory-affixed for limiting resonance from the nearby woofers, are in great shape as are the voice coil dustcaps. Plus, the black-enameled steel baskets have no dings or scratches, just some excess factory adhesive, and the magnets are free of oxidation. Also, the +/- terminals measure the industry standard .205”, are marked for polarity (yellow dot = pos.), and have never been soldered on the spades.
More importantly, they’ve been fully tested and sound very strong with clear, fast midrange crossing over into upper treble. Plus, I tested their DC resistance at a
perfectly
-matched 16.4Ω, consistent with a nominal 16 ohm driver rating. Lastly, the mounting flanges measure 4½”, they stand roughly 1⅝” tall, and the mounting holes are spaced 2¾” adjacent / 3 15/16” diagonal apart, c-t-c.
These drivers are a great find if restoring a pair of Sherwood Evolution Six, or other suitable brand/model, and they’re also very ready for action in your next vintage speaker-building project.
So, as pictured and described, this pair of Heppner mid-tweeters is offered at a reasonable price.
